As discovered earlier, Homebrew gcc is built against a specific Apple
SDK version and doesn't work when matched up with a different version,
e.g. the one advertised as default by the macos runner image.
Before this patch this was resolved with brute force by zapping the
hack-layer gcc component to avoid the bad interference. This worked
for us, but it's fragile, accidental and doesn't translate to
real-world build environments. Thus, impractical.
Avoid this by explicitly selecting the SDK version gcc was built for and
meant to be used with, as shown by `gcc --print-sysroot`.
It assumes that the gcc binaries preinstalled on the runner images
always ship with the SDK version they reference. It also assumes
this works with and without `brew update`.
Also:
- add 4 quick build-only jobs to test all gcc/macos combos.
- list SDKs offered via CommandLineTools.

Extend `INSTALL-CMAKE` document with the list of available options,
a short description and default values.
The list may not be 100% complete.
There are no component boundaries in CMake, so the line is blurry
between curl options, CMake options, CMake Find modules options.
I included certain CMake options that seemed useful, and/or have
dedicated use withing curl's CMake source. But, all CMake built-in
options are usable, as documented upstream in CMake.
The naming of the options has a heritage and the inconsistencies with
it, including a lack of clear namespace. This may be subject to future
updates, also after figuring out which name has special meaning within
CMake and/or CMake projects out of unwritten convention or something
more tangible.
CMake allows to initialize any internal variable via `-D`. This may be
useful to pre-initialize/override feature check results. The list
doesn't contain these, and they remain officially undocumented.
Also:
- make adjustments to keep the spellchecker happy.
- retrofit description changes to the cmake sources.
- stop documenting deprecated `Find*` variables.

- Create a new macro SCH_DEV() to manage verbose debug messages that are
only useful for debugging Schannel recv decryption.
schannel_recv contains a lot of useful debug messages to help debug the
function, however in practice they are not otherwise useful and showing
them in debug builds adds a lot of noise.
To show these messages curl must now be built with
CURL_SCHANNEL_DEV_DEBUG defined.
Prior to this change many, but not all, extra-verbose messages were
wrapped in DEBUGF() so they were only shown in debug builds.

Fix the significant perf regression for vcpkg jobs by switching to the
MSYS2 shell environment from Git for Windows. This env is already used
for old-mingw-w64 job that remained unaffected by this issue.
The issue began with the windows-runner update 20241015.1.0. It bumped
Git for Windows from Git 2.46.2.windows.1 to Git 2.47.0.windows.1. GfW
bumped its MSYS2 components, including `msys-2.0.dll`. That's Cygwin
code, which may have contributed to this. Pipes were involved and
`runtests.pl` relies on pipes heavily in parallel mode. (The issue was
not seen with parallel tests disabled, in retrospect.)
This is useful as a permanent solution too. It drop GfW as a dependency
and makes Windows jobs use one less shell/env flavour.
Long term it might help to use native Windows Perl to avoid the MSYS
layer completely, if there is a way to make that work.

Also:
- detect and add required system libraries for Rustls on macOS and

Caveats:
- MSH3 generates a broken `libmsh3.pc`, so needs manual config.
Upstream PR: https://github.com/nibanks/msh3/pull/225
- Rustls `.pc` file missing, so needs manual config.
An internal change worthy of mention is that we are using the lib path
and name information returned by `pkg-config` as-is. Meaning the libname
doesn't include the full path, like it's usual with native cmake
detection. The path comes separately and needs to be rolled separately.
For this we add it to targets via `link_directories()`. We also keep tab
of them in `CURL_LIBDIRS` and use that in `libcurl.pc`. Feature checks
also need to receive these paths. CMake doesn't offer
a `CMAKE_REQUIRED_*` variable for this purpose, only
a `CMAKE_REQUIRED_LINK_OPTIONS` accepting raw linker flags. Add a macro
to convert a list of paths to linker options to solve it. wolfSSL
requires this for now.

Cygwin jobs took 30 minutes and was the reason for moving them to their
own workflow. After recent changes, they finish in 8 minutes, which is
on par or lower than the longest Windows jobs. Thus, Cygwin can now be
moved back to the Windows workflow without causing extra wait for all
the workflow jobs to complete (and allowing a manual retry for the
remaining flaky jobs).
Notice that Cygwin still uses the cygwin/cygwin-install-action action to
install Cygwin itself. This action uses no caching and the time it takes
fluctuates widely depending on mirror speed, congestion and other
things. If Cygwin tends to hold up jobs again for this or other reasons,
this patch may be reverted.

Add `CURL_CA_SEARCH_SAFE` build-time option to enable CA bundle search
in the `curl` tool directory. The lookup method was already used to find
`.curlrc` and `_curlrc` (on Windows). On Windows it overrides the unsafe
default `SearchPath()` method.
Enable with:
- cmake: `-DCURL_CA_SEARCH_SAFE=ON`
- autotools: `--enable-ca-search-safe`
- raw: `CPPFLAGS=-DCURL_CA_SEARCH_SAFE`
On Windows, before this patch the whole `PATH` was searched for
a CA bundle. `PATH` may contain unwanted or world-writable locations,
including the current directory. Searching them all is convenient to
pick up any CA bundle, but not secure.
The Muldersoft curl distro implements such CA search via a custom
patch for Windows:
cd652d4792/patch/curl_tool_doswin.diff (L50)
MSYS2/mingw-w64 distro has also been rolling a patch solving this:
https://github.com/msys2/MINGW-packages/blob/master/mingw-w64-curl/0001-Make-cURL-relocatable.patchhttps://github.com/msys2/MINGW-packages/blob/master/mingw-w64-curl/pathtools.c
Also add option to fully disable Windows CA search:
- cmake: `-DCURL_DISABLE_CA_SEARCH=ON`
- autotools: `--disable-ca-search`
- raw: `CPPFLAGS=-DCURL_DISABLE_CA_SEARCH`.
Both options are considered EXPERIMENTAL, with possible incompatible
changes or even (partial) removal in the future, depending on feedback.
An alternative, secure option is to embed the CA bundle into the binary.
Safe search can be extended to other platforms if necessary or useful,
by using `_NSGetExecutablePath()` (macOS),
`/proc/self/exe` (Linux/Cygwin), or `argv[0]`.

Add CI checker to compare `libcurl.pc` and `curl-config` files
generated by autotools and cmake builds.
Fix differences and apply tiny cleanups:
- curl-config: use single-quotes for literals.
- curl-config: quote all variables.
- curl-config: replace double with single quotes in a substituted value
that's always literal (`@prefix@`).
- libcurl.pc: spelling in `Description:`.

- cmake: fill `libdir` with `${exec_prefix}` instead of a literal.
To sync with './configure'.
- configure: fix `CURL_CA_BUNDLE` value to not generate nested quotes
in `curl-config`.
- configure: add missing `LDFLAGS` to `Libs.private` in `libcurl.pc`.
To sync with CMake.
- cmake: skip adding `CMAKE_C_IMPLICIT_LINK_LIBRARIES` for MINGW and
UNIX. They added these values as seen in CI:
MINGW: `-lmingw32 -lgcc -lmoldname -lmingwex -ladvapi32 -lshell32 -luser32 -lkernel32 -lmingw32 -lgcc -lmoldname -lmingwex`
Linux: `-lgcc -lgcc_s -lc -lgcc -lgcc_s`
- cmake: delete FIXME about enabling libssh2 by default.
`./configure` has special defaults for these packages (called: "off"):
brotli, zstd, libpsl, libssh2, libssh, wolfssl, librtmp
It looks for them, but only at system locations, which makes them
never detected e.g. on macOS. CMake doesn't offer such default mode
for now.
- GHA/macos: drop now redundant `-DCURL_DISABLE_LDAPS=ON`.
- cmake: use `CMAKE_INSTALL_INCLUDEDIR` and `CMAKE_INSTALL_LIBDIR`
instead of hardcoded `include`/`lib` when generating `libcurl.pc`.
Updates to the GHA workflow:
- move autotools out-of-tree and rename cmake out-of-tree directory
to `bld_cm` to tell it's cmake.
- disable static libcurl for `./configure` to match cmake.
- enable `pkg-config` debug output with `./configure`.
- dump list of Homebrew packages on macOS.
- dump `./configure` detailed logs.
- disable zstd and brotli for Linux, to match cmake.
There remain differences, mostly due to detection order and method. Also
some values are inherently different when using CMake and autotools,
such as `--cc`, `--configure`. autotools also generates duplicates for
`-lssl` and `-lcrypto`. macOS LDAP wants to link `-lber` while autotools
doesn't. Some build defaults are also different in autotools and cmake.
These differences are smoothened out for now by the checker script, or
via build options. Notice that lib order (a dupes) _can_ be significant
in some cases. E.g. the binutils linker is infamous for that on Windows.
Closes#14681
- Move `docs/examples` builds under a separate target.
- Make `BUILD_EXAMPLES` default to `ON`. It means to generate the rules
for `docs/examples` by default, but not build them. To build them,
an explicit `make curl-examples` (or ninja, etc) command is necessary.
This syncs behaviour with autotools, and also how both cmake and
autotools are building tests.
- GHA: update cmake jobs to use the new way of building examples.
- GHA: move examples build step at the end of the job, after building
and running tests. This allows to have build and test run results
faster, and leave the seldom-changing examples build to the end.
Building examples is the slowest build step with no practical way to
make them fast.
- appveyor: enable building examples in two old-MSVC jobs.

Both are used by `./configure` internally, not by curl C code.
CMake adds `NEED_LBER_H` to `CURL_TEST_DEFINES`, which is used by
`curl_internal_test()`, but there is no LDAP-related test made with that
call.
Thus, stop detecting and publishing these from CMake.

* Documentation is updated to describe new required version, and to link
to the upstream README about cryptography providers.
* GitHub workflow is updated to fetch 0.14.0.
* Breaking changes in`lib/vtls/rustls.c` are addressed:
* The `rustls_client_config_builder_build()` function now uses an out
parameter for the built config instead of returning it directly.
This allows the building process to fail if the default crypto
provider state isn't appropriate, or another error condition occurs.
* Default ciphersuites are collected using renamed functions named to
make it clear the ciphersuites are associated with the default
crypto provider.
* Customization of ciphersuites is now done via
a `rustls_crypto_provider_builder` used to instantiate a
`rustls_crypto_provider`. The customized provider can then can be
used with `rustls_client_config_builder_new_custom` in place of
providing ciphersuites directly.
* `rustls_connection_get_negotiated_ciphersuite()` now returns the
ciphersuite ID directly.

Closes#14793
The SSL_Session object is mutated during connection inside openssl,
and it might not be thread-safe. Besides, according to documentation
of openssl:
```
SSL_SESSION objects keep internal link information about the session
cache list, when being inserted into one SSL_CTX object's session
cache. One SSL_SESSION object, regardless of its reference count,
must therefore only be used with one SSL_CTX object (and the SSL
objects created from this SSL_CTX object).
```
If I understand correctly, it is not safe to share it even in a
single thread.
Instead, serialize the SSL_SESSION before adding it to the cache,
and deserialize it after retrieving it from the cache, so that no
concurrent write to the same object is infeasible.
Also
- add a ci test for thread sanitizer
- add a test for sharing ssl sessions concurrently
- avoid redefining memory functions when not building libcurl, but
including the soruce in libtest
- increase the concurrent connections limit in sws
Notice that there are fix for a global data race for openssl which
is not yet release. The fix is cherry pick for the ci test with
thread sanitizer.

Drop `find_package(libssh CONFIG)` detection method in favour of
the Find module that supports both `pkg-config`, and CMake-native

This aligns `libssh` detection with other dependencies. It makes the

Also enable libssh in a GHA/macos cmake job for build coverage.
